A word from our founder

The story of POLKO began in 2020 in my living room in London, four months pregnant and two weeks into lockdown - when our concept of work, play, travel and life was being collectively reevaluated and it became more important than ever to think, create and live with positivity and flexibility. So I did something I hadn't done for a long time, I started to design.

As a little girl growing up in the 90s in Pakistan there was little to no ready-made clothing available. We wore what we created, and I spent many weekends with my mother immersed in fabric markets, finding trimmings, and sketching designs. It was fun, it was exciting, it was creative. I even recycled cushions covers and made them into dresses!

Here's the thing...

Our hunger for the latest trends and our desire to purchase a new outfit for every occasion is hurting the planet. Garments are being worn much less and disposed of quicker than ever before. As creators and citizens of the world, it’s on us to change that.

Fast-forward 20 years and my philosophy has remained the same: it all starts with better design. At POLKO, we aspire to a slower, simpler and more thoughtful way of life and we am so excited to bring our carefully and consciously crafted hero-pieces that let you do more with less - and it's kinder to our planet.

Here's a picture of me from the 1990s in a dress made from an old cushion cover x

WITH LOVE,

MAHEEN
